On September 12th 1993, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman aired on ABC. The television series – a modern reworking of the Superman mythology – starred Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher, and was a huge hit with audiences.
The show was fun and frothy, and offered a good mix of action and adventure, with a strong dash of romance. It made household names of Cain and Hatcher, and remained on air for four seasons, running for a total of 88 episodes.
Although Lois & Clark‘s TV journey was cut short in 1997 (and I’m still a little peeved about its abrupt cancellation), the series has remained popular with fans ever since. It was a success when it originally aired, and thanks to countless re-runs over the last few decades, it has picked up a new following.
Outside of television, Lois & Clark has also found an audience through DVD. The show is available on Region 1, 2, and 4, with episodes available in single season releases, as well as via a complete series boxset.
The initial release of these DVDs was back in 2005, and while there have been subsequent reissues since, and the show has been made available digitally, one question remains: Isn’t it about time Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman was released on Blu-ray?
Not only is it time to update the DVD releases (come on Warner Bros., it has been 15 years), it is also time to give Lois & Clark the Blu-ray treatment. So many shows from yesteryear have been upgraded for Blu-ray, so why not this one?
I get that Lois & Clark is an older show, and some older shows don’t look that great in HD, but Lois & Clark is the same age as The X-Files and that series received a great Blu-ray release a few years back. Plus, even older shows such as Batman ’66, The Incredible Hulk, Knight Rider and The A-Team are on Blu-ray, so why not this well regarded Superman show?
In my mind, this is a huge oversight. Lois & Clark was (and still is) immensely popular and yet this show has not been given the Blu-ray treatment.
There’s also a lot of interest in ’90s nostalgia right now, and as this was a huge show during the 1990s, surely it makes sense to release a Blu-ray while the interest is there.
But it’s not just remastered episodes I want to see, I would also love to see some new interviews with the old cast members. Both Cain and Hatcher have got together in recent years to tour the convention circuit, so I am sure they would be up for recording some new supplementary material, for a documentary or featurette(s).
It might also be nice to get some more insights into the proposed fifth season that sadly never materialised. Over the years, there have been a few discussions here and there about what we would have seen on screen, but it would be nice to have all this information on a swanky new Blu-ray.
Add to this some behind the scenes footage, maybe some new commentaries or retrospectives, and I’m already willing to throw money at any retailer that gets this in stock!
So, yeah, I ask once again, isn’t it time Lois & Clark was released on Blu-ray?!

It’s not quite Blu-ray, but the show is now available in a true HD remaster (not an upscale) on HBO Max. It looks great!!
Oh, wow! Sadly HBO MAX is only available in the US, but hopefully the HD version will find its way to other territories around the world. Thanks for the info! 🙂
