As one of the most light-hearted Batman movies ever produced, Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin (1997) is filled with fun dialogue. From Batman’s “the heat is on”, to Mr. Freeze’s “stay cool, bird boy”, the film is loaded with killer quotes and instantly repeatable lines.

The partnership is straining
As Batman & Robin opens, the movie requires a line that highlights the tone of the film.
The quote
Robin: “I want a car. Chicks dig the car.”
Batman: “This is why Superman works alone.”
Why this exchange is awesome
This exchange works on three levels: The line about “chicks” digging the car is a call back to a similar line in Batman Forever (1995); the tone of the exchange is playful like the rest of the movie; and it establishes an undercurrent in Batman and Robin’s partnership. This last part becomes very important for the story that follows.

If Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed up to appear in a movie, then expect Arnie-style quotes throughout the film.

Why this line is awesome
Mr. Freeze is Arnold Schwarzenegger and Arnold Schwarzenegger is Mr. Freeze. There’s no in between. If he’s in the movie then he’s there to kick some ass (or some ice).

Why this line is awesome
This is another fun quote that plays up the camp nature of the movie, while allowing Arnie to chew up the screen with ice-related dialogue. It’s over the top, but that’s how the whole movie plays out.

When it comes to Batman & Robin, the general rule of thumb is: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. More Arnie, more killer lines.

Arnie is having so much fun playing Mr. Freeze. The character might not be the Mr. Freeze that Bat-fans asked for, but it’s a Freeze that Arnie really enjoys playing and he throws himself into each line.

Why this line is awesome
To ensure Mr. Freeze is seen to be one cold customer, he is given a line like this which effectively tells the audience he doesn’t care about anything. He is frozen-hearted and can not be easily reasoned with.

Sisters are doing for themselves
While Mr. Freeze gets the lion’s share of the best lines, Poison Ivy isn’t far behind.
The quote
Poison Ivy: “As I told Lady Freeze, when I pulled her plug, this is a one-woman show.”
Why this line is awesome
With Poison Ivy in full vamp mode, the character is able to demonstrate her ability to be the meanest villain in the movie. By the end of the picture, Mr. Freeze will have redeemed himself, while Poison Ivy won’t, and this line demonstrates she has no compassion or interest in anyone but herself.

Ivy knows how to work a room.

Poison Ivy: “Some lucky boy’s about to hit the honey pot. The winner will receive an evening of my company. I’ll bring everything you see here, plus everything you don’t.”
Why this line is awesome
This line is a fine example of Ivy’s confidence. She sees herself as a prize; she believes her company is the best; and she feels she has more to offer than what is on display. She has moxy and that makes for a formidable villain.

A case of the ex
And finally, it needs to be stated that Batman makes bad choices when it comes to women.
The quote
Batman: “Why are all the gorgeous ones homicidal maniacs? Is it me?”
Why this line is awesome
This is a great line, because it acts as a call back to Batman’s relationship with Catwoman in Batman Returns (1992). It is also a nice reminder to audiences that while Bruce Wayne picks girlfriends which have a future, Batman will forever get close to bad girls.

Those are the eight best quotes from Batman & Robin, but there are still some lines that deserve an honourable mention. The following three are some of my personal favourites from the movie, that didn’t make the cut – and yes, these lines are all delivered by Mr. Freeze.
First up, while threatening the Dynamic Duo, Mr. Freeze teaches a history lesson…
Mr. Freeze: “What killed the dinosaurs? The Ice Age!”
Second, Mr. Freeze makes it perfectly clear he is not going to pay for his crimes…
Mr. Freeze: “You’re not sending me to the cooler!”
And finally, just in case it’s not clear who he is, Mr. Freeze introduces himself in a very aggressive way…
Mr. Freeze: “Allow me to break the ice: My name is Freeze. Learn it well, for it’s the chilling sound of your doom.”
However you cut it, Mr. Freeze means business.
