When director Tim Burton’s Batman arrived in cinemas during summer 1989, the film was a huge hit – not only domestically, but also worldwide. Batman became a huge earner for Warner Bros. Pictures and introduced a generation of fans to the Dark Knight.

But how much money did the movie make?

During its opening weekend in the US, Batman 1989 took over $40 million at the box office. According to Box Office Mojo, the exact total was $40,489,746.

Not only was this a strong opening for the comic book movie, it also took more than its budget of $35 million. This was a good start for the film and it only continued to rise from there.

By the time Batman finished its theatrical run in the US, the film made $251,188,924. Internationally, it fared well too, taking a further $160,160,000.

Worldwide this lifted Batman’s total to $411,348,924. By today’s standards, where comic book movies such as Avengers: Endgame (2019) take over 2.7 billion, Batman’s box office results might not seem that amazing, but back in 1989 this was very good – so much so, that Batman developed a huge legacy.

Due to Batman’s success at the box office, the film spawned three sequels: Batman Returns (1992), Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997). Batman also inspired the overall look and feel of many comic book movies that would be released after 1989, from Dick Tracy (1990) to The Shadow (1994) and more, they all took visual cues from the Caped Crusader.
