In 2018, Batman: The Animated Series was released on Blu-ray, delivering a truly epic collection of animated adventures to fans the world over. For the first time in the show’s history, Batman: The Animated Series became available in high definition, via a bumper-packed boxset and it was glorious to behold.
In 2019, largely due to the success of that release, Batman: The Animated Series spin-off show, Batman Beyond received a similar release. A full, series collection boxset hit shelves worldwide, to deliver every Batman Beyondepisode in HD.
Having both shows readily available in this format was great, as it provided the best picture quality possible in one neat little box – but aren’t we missing something? We have Batman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond on Blu-ray, but what about Superman: The Animated Series? Isn’t it about time Superman: The Animated Series was released on Blu-ray?

Originally broadcast between 1996 and 2000, Superman was the first spin-off show from Batman: The Animated Series. The show featured a colourful cast of characters, from supporting players such as Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, to classic villains including Lex Luthor, Metallo and Mr. Mxyzptlk.
Across the course of three seasons, Superman: The Animated Series delivered 54 episodes. This included a three-part story with Batman, called World’s Finest, as well as episodes guest-starring The Flash, Green Lantern, Lobo and Aquaman.
Superman: The Animated Series didn’t quite hit the same critical or commercial success as its predecessor, but it certainly built up a strong following – and is in my opinion, to date one of the best adaptations of the Supermanmythology. The series also set the ground work for the hugely successful shows Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, so with Superman we would not have seen these amazing shows.
So, where do we stand on the show’s availability?

To date, select episodes of Superman: The Animated Series have been released on VHS and DVD, and the complete run has been released on DVD and digital. However, there has been no swish Blu-ray edition like its peers.
Superman is one of the most popular and most recognisable characters in the world; so, surely there is a big market for a Superman: The Animated Series Blu-ray boxset?
Hmm… maybe it’s just a matter of time. We can but hope.
**UPDATE**UPDATE**UPDATE**
OK, here’s some very welcome news: Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced that Superman: The Animated Series WILL be getting a Blu-ray release! The show is being brought to Blu-ray to mark the show’s 25th anniversary.
All 54 episodes of the series will be included in a new Blu-ray boxset, alongside several hours of bonus features, including a brand-new documentary called Superman: Timeless Icon. Other bonus material includes featurettes and episode commentaries.
All of the episodes in the boxset will be re-mastered (hurrah!) and split across six discs. Digital copies of each episode will also be included, so fans can watch the show on the move.
The Superman: The Animated Series Blu-ray boxset will be available to buy from October 2021.

Fans are waiting patiently. Let me thank you now if you decide to release this wonderful adaption of
Superman in animation. It’s probably my favorite of the many forms of media he comes in. Bruce Timm and his team best in the nineties. He was blessed with many talented people around him.
