How many Batman movies feature Patrick Leahy?

If you are a long-time fan of the Batman movie series, you may have noticed a certain person popping up in the background of multiple films. That person is US Senator Patrick Leahy.

Have you spotted him? He’s there, in more Batman movies than you might think.

Leahy has appeared in numerous Batman movies, including most notably a scene opposite the Joker in The Dark Knight (2008). His first appearance in the series began with Batman Forever (1995).

The reason Leahy appears so often in Batman movies, is because he is a huge Bat-fan. So big in fact, that outside of the movies Patrick Leahy has written forewords for a Batman trade paperback (The Dark Knight Archives Vol 1) and a Batman graphic novel (Batman: Death of Innocents).

Leahy also had a voiceover role in a 1995 episode of Batman: The Animated Series. He played a governor in Showdown – an episode set during the 1880s, which focused on Ra’s al Ghul.

To date, Patrick Leahy has appeared in five live-action Batman movies. The films he has appeared in are as follows:

Batman Forever (1995)
Batman & Robin (1997)
The Dark Knight (2008)
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016).

In Batman Forever, Leahy received an uncredited cameo, while he played himself in Batman & Robin.

In The Dark Knight, Leahy took on the role of a guest at a fundraiser for Harvey Dent. In the scene, Leahy’s ‘Gentleman’ stood up to Heath Ledger’s Joker, but lived to tell the tale.

In 2016, speaking to Roll Call about his co-star in the scene, Leahy said: “It’s hard to see anybody do a better job than Heath Ledger did. He scared the heck out of me when he came at me with a knife. I didn’t have to act.”

For The Dark Knight Rises, Leahy played a member of the board at Wayne Enterprises. While in Batman v Superman, Leahy played the part of Senator Purrington.

While Leahy’s roles are small, once you notice him in one Batman movie, you will find you will notice him in all the Batman movies. So, keep a lookout, because you never know where he will appear next.
