In 1995, Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever arrived on the big screen, to become the third entry in the Batman movie anthology (1989 – 1997). The film placed the Caped Crusader in an action-packed adventure and featured a cast of iconic characters, including Robin, the Riddler, and Two-Face.

In addition to the well-known heroes and villains who appeared in the movie, Batman Forever also featured two colourful supporting characters, known as Sugar and Spice. Prior to the release of Batman Forever, Sugar and Spice were not well-known to Batman fans, but featured quite prominently throughout the movie.

Who are Sugar and Spice?

In Batman Forever, Sugar and Spice are a villainous duo who mostly appear in scenes with Harvey ‘Two-Face’ Dent. The characters are portrayed as Harvey’s girlfriends, and reflect the two different sides of his personality.

Sugar wears white and represents the good side of Harvey Dent, while Spice wears black, and represents Harvey’s bad side. It is implied they aim to ‘please’ Harvey at all times, by attending to his individual needs.

It is unclear how Sugar and Spice became associated with Harvey, whether they are girlfriends for hire, or they really care for him, but for majority of Batman Forever they can be found by his side. However, towards the end of the movie, following a showdown between Batman, the Riddler, and Two-Face (which ends badly for the villains), Sugar and Spice flee the situation and are never seen again.

Are Sugar and Spice original characters?

Sugar and Spice are original creations, who made their debut in Batman Forever. The characters did not previously appear in a Batman comic book or Batman television show, and to date, this is their only appearance in the Batman movie series.

Do Sugar and Spice have alter-egos?
