In 2018, New Zealand actor, Temuera Morrison took on the role of Thomas Curry for the big screen DC Extended Universe movie, Aquaman. In the film, Morrison played the part of Aquaman’s father, appearing opposite lead actor, Jason Momoa.

Morrison is no stranger to the world of DC Comics, having previously played Abin Sur in 2011’s Green Lantern. But playing in one corner of the DC Universe didn’t mean he would automatically get a part in another DC movie.

In order to nab the role of lighthouse keeper Tom Curry, Morrison required a fool-proof plan to ensure he was the casting agent’s first choice. The plan involved food, song, and a dash of good old hospitality.

Speaking in an interview for DC FanDome, Morrison, said:

“The funny thing was, I was at my agent’s (house) in Los Angeles at the time, so we had a plan to invite the casting agent to his house, and put on a barbecue. And we thought ‘this is better than going for an audition.’

“We would put on the barbecue, then we would invite the casting agent along to the house, feed them up, and then they can go back to their offices and all they can talk about is Temuera Morrison. So, I thought ‘let’s try getting a job that way.’

Morrison and his agent put the plan into action and soon enough, Aquaman’s casting agent was at the house, being fed. But it didn’t just stop there – a little serenading took place too.

Morrison continued:

“I thought, ‘man, I had better feed this casting agent well, because I want to be in Aquaman’, and I knew if she had turned up then she was obviously interested in having a look at me. And then I got the guitar out and I started singing every song I possibly knew to try to impress her.

“By this time, I think she was getting sore ears, but she was still being nice and cordial and then later on I heard (that I was) in!”

So, there you have it; if you are an actor and you are interested in a part, take a leaf out of Temuera Morrison’s book and invite the casting agent to your house (or your agent’s house), feed them, play them music, and be a good host. It might not work every time, but it can’t hurt, right?
