In 2006, Brandon Routh donned the iconic red and blue costume to play the role of Superman in the live-action adventure, Superman Returns. The movie, a continuation of the Christopher Reeve-era of Superman films, updated the Superman story and reintroduced the character to a new generation.
Superman Returns performed fairly well at the box office, and brought Routh to the attention of fans worldwide, but how many Superman movies did he star in? For the answer to this question and more, please read on.
The Brandon Routh Superman movies
Brandon Routh played the Man of Steel for one Superman movie. The film was directed by Bryan Singer and starred Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey, James Marsden, Parker Posey, Frank Langella, Sam Huntingdon, Eva Marie Saint, Tristan Lake Leabu, Kal Penn and Marlon Brando.
What was the reception of Superman Returns?
Why did Superman Returns not receive a sequel?
While Superman Returns received fairly positive reviews, and the box office was decent, the movie wasn’t as successful as Warner Bros. Pictures had hoped. The studio had big expectations for what was essentially a revival of its long-dormant Superman movie series, and Superman Returns didn’t quite meet those expectations.
For a while there were some discussions about continuing the series with a sequel starring Routh, but ultimately those discussions fell by the wayside in favour of rebooting the Superman films with the unconnected movie, Man of Steel (2013).
Did Brandon Routh ever reprise the role of Superman?
Although Superman Returns was Brandon Routh’s only big screen Superman movie, the actor did reprise the role of Superman in 2019. Playing the exact same version of Superman who had appeared in Superman Returns, Routh donned the costume once again for Crisis on Infinite Earths (2019) – a four-part television story which appeared across episodes of Arrow, Batwoman, The Flash, and Supergirl.
Crisis on Infinite Earths featured many super heroes and established the concept that all of the past DC movies and television shows exist in the DC multiverse – a sprawling collection of universes incorporating Batman ’66, The Flash ’90, Batman ’89, Titans and many, many more.
