For a brief period of time during the 1990s, Gossip Gerty appeared in the Batman movie series. The character popped up as a minor character who appeared in the live-action movies Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997).
Although her screen time was limited, Gossip Gerty stood out from the crowd as Gotham City’s number one showbiz reporter. She was present at various key events in Gotham’s social calendar and interacted with Bruce Wayne in both Batman movies.
But who is Gossip Gerty and why is she so significant to the Batman movie series? Read on for all the details.

Who is Gossip Gerty?

As noted above, Gossip Gerty is a showbiz correspondent who rubs shoulders with Gotham’s elite. The character appears in two Batman movies, and is known for her glamourous appearance, as well her inquisitive mind.
Gerty first appears in Batman Forever, during a scene in which Bruce Wayne takes Dr. Chase Meridian on a date to the circus. In Batman & Robin, Gerty makes a reappearance, at first in a scene set at the Gotham Observatory, when Bruce Wayne meets Dr. Pamela Isley for the first time, and then during the charity ball sequence, which is gate-crashed by Poison Ivy and Bane (and then Mr. Freeze).
Gossip Gerty is an original character for the Batman mythology, who did not originate in any of the Batman comics. She was created especially for the Batman movies, and more specifically for actress, Elizabeth Sanders to play.

Who played Gossip Gerty?

In the Batman movie series, Gossip Gerty is played by Elizabeth Sanders. Before her retirement from acting in 1997, Sanders had a small acting career, which began in 1982 with a role in the television series, The Edge of Night.
The reason Sanders is so significant to Batman fans is because she was married to Batman co-creator, Bob Kane. Sanders and Kane were married from 1987 up until Bob Kane’s death in 1998.

Why does Elizabeth Sanders look so familiar?

Sanders will look very familiar to Batman movie fans because in addition to playing the role of Gossip Gerty in Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, the actress also appears in Batman Returns (1992) – albeit in a different, and smaller role. In Batman Returns, Sanders plays the part of a Gothamite, who briefly appears on screen to gossip about the Penguin.
