In Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021), amongst the many scenes included in the movie is one in which Barry Allen, aka The Flash, goes for a job interview at Central Bark – a ‘doggy’ day care centre. In the scene, Barry turns up late, bamboozles the interviewer, and makes friends with the dogs.
In the midst of this scene – and unbeknown to the interviewer – Barry momentarily skips out of the interview and uses his super speed abilities to conduct a rescue. The rescue involves a young girl, who is about to be seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident.
But who is the girl and why is this scene so important?
Who does the Flash rescue in Zack Snyder’s Justice League?
The girl in question appears in Zack Snyder’s Justice League around the 1-hour 6-minutes mark, initially as another job applicant, who Barry Allen bumps into as he is walking into Central Bark. The two characters share a glance as she leaves the doggy day care centre, giving the impression there is a connection between her and Barry.
As the scene plays out, the girl – played by Kiersey Clemons – is then involved in the aforementioned motor vehicle accident. Barry saves her, but he almost compromises his secret in the process.
If you’re unfamiliar with DC/Flash mythology, then you will be unaware of the character’s importance to the DC Universe, or to Barry, but it you are a comic book fan they you will know her well. The girl is Iris West – a long-running character who has been a part of the DC Universe since 1956, when she made her debut in the pages of Showcase issue #4.
Iris is traditionally a reporter and the main love interest of Barry Allen. In the early years of the comics the pair dated, before they married, and she appears in Zack Snyder’s Justice League as a set-up for future stories in the DC movie universe.
Outside of the comics, Iris has appeared in cartoons, animated movies and live-action television shows. Most notably, she is one of the main characters in the 2014 The Flash TV series, where she is played by Candice Patton and is married to Barry Allen.
Why was Iris West cut out of 2017’s Justice League?
As with many characters and scenes featured in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Iris West was trimmed out of 2017’s Justice League as part of a desire by Warner Bros. Pictures to make a shorter movie. Her entire appearance, as well as the rescue scene with the Flash, was not viewed as being a pivotal part of the story, so was cut for length.
