Over the years, the Batman movies have received both praise and criticism – particularly when it comes to awards. While the series as a whole has won many, many great accolades, including Academy Awards, it has also picked up a few Golden Raspberry Awards along the way.

But what awards have the Batman films won? How many awards did The Dark Knight receive? And what was the Academy Award that was given to Suicide Squad?

All of these answers are covered in this post, which highlights all of the awards that have been won by the live-action Batman movies. From the good achievements, to the bad, they are all covered!

But please note, if I have not listed a live-action Batman movie below then it did not win any awards. This is why Batman: The Movie (1966) is not included on this list (it was not an award-winning Bat-film).

_______________

Batman (1989)

In terms of nominations, Batman was short-listed in six categories at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), and received further nominations at the Saturn Awards, the Hugo Awards, and the Golden Globes. However, it didn’t win a single award at any of these ceremonies – can you believe it?!

Thankfully Batman won an important award in the film industry – an Academy Award! The accolade was for Best Art Direction, which was given to Anton Furst and Peter Young.

_______________

Batman Returns (1992)

Batman Returns was nominated for a number of awards including Academy Awards, BAFTAs, MTV Awards and even a Golden Raspberry Award. Of all the nominations, the movie picked up two awards: BMI Film Music Award for Danny Elfman and Best Make-Up for Stan Winston and Ve Neill.

_______________

Batman Forever (1995)

As with Batman ’89 and Batman Returns, Batman Forever received multiple award nominations, covering the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes, the Saturn Awards and the MTV Awards. But sadly, Batman Forever won just one award for the film’s soundtrack: Best Song for Kiss from a Rose by Seal, which featured on the movie’s soundtrack.

_______________

Batman & Robin (1997)

Batman & Robin was nominated for a number of awards, including the Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film, but the only positive award it picked up came via The Smashing Pumpkins. The band’s song, The End is the Beginning is the End – which featured on the Batman & Robin soundtrack – won Best Hard Rock Performance at the Grammy Awards.

In terms of negative awards, Batman & Robin was nominated for a number of Golden Raspberry Awards, of which it won one for Alicia Silverstone in the category of Worst Supporting Actress. Silverstone also picked up Worst Supporting Actress in the Stinkers Bad Movie Awards, alongside Stinkers awards for Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Director.

_______________

Catwoman (2004)

Catwoman was not well received by critics or audiences and as such the only awards it received were negative. The movie was nominated for seven Golden Raspberry Awards and won four: Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Actress for Halle Berry.

The saving grace? Berry turned up in person to receive her Golden Raspberry Award, demonstrating she had a good sense of humour. Well played.

_______________

Batman Begins (2005)

In 2005, Batman Begins rebooted the Batman movie franchise and became both a commercial success and a huge critical hit too. The film was nominated for many awards, from Academy Awards and BAFTAs to Hugo Awards and Teen Choice Awards.

Of the awards picked up by the film, the movie won three Scream Awards – Best Director for Christopher Nolan, Best Scream-Play, and The Ultimate Scream; a Phoenix Film Critics Society Award for Best Stunts; an MTV Movie Award for Best Hero for Christian Bale; the Hollywood Film Awards Sound of the Year Award for David Evans; and the Golden Schmoes Award for Favourite Movie of the Year. Batman Begins also picked up the ASCAP Film and Television Music’s Top Box Office Films Award for James Newton Howard, Hans Zimmer, and Ramin Djawadi.

Additional awards included three Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films Awards for Best Fantasy Film, Best Actor for Christian Bale, and Best Writing for Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Meanwhile, in the Saturn Awards, Batman Begins picked up Best Fantasy Film, Best Actor for Christian Bale, and Best Screenplay for Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer.

You might want to put on a pot of coffee for this next movie – this is going to take some time. The Dark Knight was hugely successful, both critically and commercially and picked up over 100 awards, including:

Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor for Heath Ledger and Best Sound Editing for Richard King; two African-American Film Critics Association Awards; two Alliance of Women Film Journalists EDA Awards; the American Film Institute Award for Movie of the Year; an Art Directors Guild Award for Excellence in Production Design; an Australian Film Critics Association Commendation for Best Overseas Film; and five Austin Film Critics Association Awards.

The movie also won a BAFTA for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Heath Ledger); a Boston Society of Film Critics Best Supporting Actor Award (Heath Ledger); and three Central Ohio Film Critics Association Awards.

Additional awards included Taurus World Stunt Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, 12 Scream Awards(!!) and many, many, many more. A full list of the awards can be found at the bottom of this post.

_______________

The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

The Dark Knight Rises was well received and landed a heap of nominations, but it didn’t pick up anywhere near as many awards The Dark Knight. Nominations included Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards, a Grammy Award, MTV Awards and Satellite Awards, amongst others.

As for the awards The Dark Knight Rises received, these included an AFI Award for Movie of the Year; Golden Trailer Awards for Best in Show, Summer 2012 Blockbuster Trailer, Best International Poster, and Best Summer 2012 Blockbuster Poster; and a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress for Anne Hathaway. The movie also picked up a Teen Choice Award for Anne Hathaway.

_______________

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

Image: ©Warner Bros. Pictures/DC Entertainment

Shortly after the movie opened, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was nominated for a number of awards. Unfortunately, the majority of these awards were not particularly gratifying.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice picked up four Golden Raspberry Awards: Worst Screenplay, Worst Supporting Actor for Jesse Eisenberg, Worst Screen Combo for Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, and an award for Worst Prequel, Remake, Ripoff or Sequel. The only positive award that the movie picked up was a Golden Trailer Award for Most Original Poster.

_______________

Suicide Squad (2016)

Image: ©Warner Bros. Pictures/DC Entertainment

David Ayer’s Suicide Squad was nominated for a number of awards and won eight. This included the Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini and Christopher Nelson.

The other seven awards included a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actress in an Action Movie for Margot Robbie; a Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Soundtrack Album; a Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award for Favourite Soundtrack; and the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Award for Best Period and/or Character Makeup in a Feature-Length Motion Picture. In the People’s Choice Awards Margot Robbie won Favourite Action Movie Actress; and at the Teen Choice Awards both the movie and Cara Delevigne won accolades.

_______________

Justice League (2017)

Image: ©Warner Bros. Pictures/DC Entertainment

2017’s Justice League received a number of nominations including Kids’ Choice Awards, Teen Choice Awards and Golden Trailer Awards. But out of all its nominations it only won two awards: a Golden Schmoes Award for Biggest Disappointment of the Year (ouch) and a BMI Film & TV Award for Music for Danny Elfman.

_______________

Joker (2019)

Image: ©Warner Bros. Pictures/DC Entertainment

As with The Dark Knight, Joker proved very popular with critics and industry insiders – and rightly so, it was a fantastic movie. Amongst the many, many awards it picked up, Joker won three British Academy Film Awards, two Academy Awards, two Critics Choice Awards, two Satellite Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award and three Venice Film Festival Awards, amongst others.
