In 1997s Batman & Robin, the Dynamic Duo found themselves locked in battle with a trio of villains in the shape of Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, and Bane. With the help of Batgirl, Batman and Robin managed to defeat their adversaries, saving Gotham City in the process.
But what if Batman, Robin, and Batgirl were unsuccessful? What if the villains won? What would have happened next?
___
In the movie, Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze formulate a plan to bring a permanent winter to Gotham City. Utilising a telescope at the Gotham Observatory, combined with Freeze’s Freeze Engine, the pair want to flash-freeze the city and turn every citizen into an ice sculpture.
Once the city becomes an inhabitable icy wasteland, Ivy and Freeze want to repopulate Gotham with flora and fauna (including Ivy’s mutant plants). The goal is to decimate the city and give Mother Nature a second chance.

The pair come close to achieving their goal, when Freeze activates the telescope and partially freezes the city. From the moment the ice hits, Batman, Robin, and Batgirl have 11 minutes to thaw the citizens and save the city, which of course they do.
But let’s imagine that the plan came to fruition. Instead of freezing parts of Gotham, Mr. Freeze managed to cover all of the city in ice. And let’s say, that despite the 11-minute window, the heroes did not manage to thaw Gotham in time.
Freeze and Ivy are triumphant. Gotham is no more. But what next? If Freeze and Ivy did win, what would have happened?

Prior to teaming up with Poison Ivy and Bane, Mr. Freeze was motivated by one goal – to find a cure to his wife’s battle with MacGregor’s Syndrome. He only abandoned this goal when he mistakenly believed that Batman had killed his wife (a lie told to him by Poison Ivy).
With Gotham destroyed, would he and Ivy have moved forward with plans to repopulate Gotham with greenery or would he have discovered Ivy’s deception? Once he found out Ivy had lied to him, how would he have reacted?
And how did they think they would get away with freezing Gotham? Surely once the authorities discovered Gotham was frozen, they would have sent in a team to arrest and/or disable the villains.
Ordinary crimes can be handled by the Gotham City Police Department and the Dynamic Duo, but once the threat becomes city wide, surely this calls for a military response. Did they not think about this? Did they not think that Superman would have flown over to Gotham to take them into custody?
If Freeze and Ivy were triumphant, they would have made themselves bigger targets, beyond Batman, Robin, and Batgirl. The world would have been watching and someone would have taken action.
So, what is the logical conclusion? Would the Justice League have fought Mr. Freeze? Or would Freeze and Ivy have continued until they covered the planet in ice? And once the taste for revenge subsided, would Freeze have been truly happy, living in a world with Ivy, Bane, and some mutant plants?
Thoughts please. If the villains were triumphant in Batman & Robin, what would have happened next? Sound off in the comments section and let me know what you think.

One Response to What if Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy were triumphant in Batman & Robin?
If you remember at the start of the movie when Batman and Robin were picking their choice of vehicles to stop Freeze at the museum, Robin wanted to take the batmobile saying with a cocky grin ” I’ll take the car. Chicks dig the car”. Batman turns to Robin stoically and replied ” This is why Superman works alone”, so that means Superman exists in the Schumacherverse. So if Freeze and Ivy were successful, Superman would have gotten wind and would ultimately have stopped them if Batman, Robin and Batgirl failed
