In a previous post, I reviewed two of the 80th anniversary Batman movie Funko Pop! figures: Batman ’89 and Batman Forever. The figures – inspired by two hit Batman movies – were released in 2019 to celebrate 80 years of the Caped Crusader.

In this post I am taking a look at yet another movie-inspired Dark Knight, in the shape of Batman ’97. This figure is based on the George Clooney version of Batman who appeared in Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin (1997).

____________

Batman & Robin Funko Pop!

As previously highlighted during my discussion on the Batman ’89/Batman Forever Funko Pops!, these 80th anniversary Pop! figures are incredibly accurate to the original movie. Not only do they boast the same colours (in this case silver and blue) but they are also incredibly detailed – just look at the Bat-suit on this figure!

In Batman & Robin, George Clooney wore two different Bat-suits. This figure is based on Clooney’s second suit, which means it is the outfit with the most embellishments and it also means there no Bat-nipples.

As you can see in the images above, these embellishments are weaved into the overall design of the figure, from the knuckle armour and ab plates, to the toe caps and ear vents – all of these unique touches are on display. The suit even boasts three Bat-symbols (why have one Bat-symbol when you can have three?) which are placed on the figure’s boots and chest.

And speaking of his chest, look at the way Batman’s chest puffs out as he stands tall and proud – what a hero! The pose has ‘classic good guy’ written all over it and is very much in line with the way the Caped Crusader was depicted in Batman & Robin.

I love it! I genuinely love what Funko have done with this figure.

Plastic fantastic

Standing at approximately 5 inches in height, the George Clooney Batman figure is another great addition to the 80th anniversary collection – and one I never imagined would get a release. Batman & Robin does not have the same popularity as Batman ’89 or Batman Forever, so seeing a Clooney Batman on toy shelves (in 2020) is a pleasant surprise.

The figure is priced at £10.99 – in keeping with the standard price for Funko Pop! figures – and if this one sells well then maybe (just maybe) we will see an Arnie-inspired Mr. Freeze or an Uma Thurman Poison Ivy. We can but hope.

As with the other figures in this anniversary collection, the Clooney Batman comes in special edition packaging – a black box with gold foil lettering. This adds a premium feel to the item, even though it retails for the same price as a standard Funko Pop!.

If you are a fan of the movie, this figure should be at the top of your ‘next purchase’ list. It is a great item that perfectly captures the look and tone of Batman & Robin.
