Many people swear by the ranking system used on Rotten Tomatoes, suggesting it is the best way to gauge whether a movie is good or bad. But do you subscribe to this point of view? Let’s see.

In this post, I am taking a look at every entry in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), to see how well each movie ranks according to Rotten Tomatoes. I am looking at both the Tomatometer rating and the Audience Score, to see what films are deemed to be the best (and worst). But will you agree with the outcome?

The movies in the DCEU

Before I look at the rankings, let me just explain what films are considered to be part of the DCEU.

The DCEU is a collection of movies that are all set within the same universe. The films share the same continuity and, in some cases, the same characters/actors.

The first entry in the DCEU was 2013’s Man of Steel. This was followed in 2016 with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, in 2017 with Wonder Woman and Justice League, and in 2018 with Aquaman.

In 2019, the DCEU expanded further with Shazam! and in 2020, Birds of Prey.

OK, so that’s what the DCEU movie are, now let’s see how Rotten Tomatoes ranks them.

DCEU ranked by Tomatometer

Here are the Tomatometer ratings for the DCEU films, with movies ranked from highest to lowest:

  • Wonder Woman (2017) 93%
  • Shazam! (2019) 90%
  • Birds of Prey (2020) 79%
  • Aquaman (2018) 66%
  • Man of Steel (2013) 56%
  • Justice League (2017) 40%
  • Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) 28%
  • Suicide Squad (2016) 27%

Wonder Woman and Shazam! fair well, with scores of 90% and over. On the flipside, Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad don’t rank so well, with neither film managing to reach the 30% mark.

So, that’s what the critics think, now let’s see what audiences think…

DCEU ranked by Audience Score

Here are the Audience Scores for the DCEU films, with movies ranked from highest to lowest:

  • Wonder Woman (2017) 87%
  • Shazam! (2019) 83%
  • Birds of Prey (2020) 79%
  • Man of Steel (2013) 75%
  • Aquaman (2018) 74%
  • Justice League (2017) 72%
  • Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) 63%
  • Suicide Squad (2016) 59%

As you can see, the rankings are more or less the same, but in some places the scores differ quite significantly. Batman v Superman now has a much higher score of 63%, and Suicide Squad is not far behind, suggesting audiences enjoy these films much more than critics do.

So, do you agree with the rankings and scores? Should they be higher/lower? Are you more inclined to agree with the Tomatometer ratings or the Audience Scores? Sound off in the comments section below and let me know your thoughts.
